Dr Jop

Michael is an American Career Musician/Entertainer known by his peers as a "Musician's Musician!" Mike has performed for standing ovation audiences since the beginning of his career. Being a 1st call studio musician, he has been requested by Jazz greats Eddie Harris, Stanley Turrentine, Ernie Watts, Larry Coryell, etc... Mike has also performed and recorded with such blues and R&B legends as Jonell Moser, Elvin Bishop, Lee Oscar, B.B. King, Robert Cray, The Temptations, The Neville Brothers, the "Godfather of Soul" James Brown, and so many more.

Dr Jop has remained at the forefront of the Seattle music scene with such great bands as Danny Ward and Reality, Alive and Well, Dr. Funk, Darren Motamedy, Michael Powers, Korla Wyagal, The Reputations, which featured the legendary performances of Kurt Kolstad, Tim Scott, Rich Dangel and Denny Goodhew...etc.

Michael is currently performing locally with his own 7 piece band, ‘Dr Jop Funk Shop,' his Duo/Trio and/or Quartet under the name W Michael Jaap and Friends, and a plethora of other NW groups including the 8 piece - Mo-Betta-Band, Red House, Danny Vernon Elvis Tribute, The Walleys (Walley and the Beavs) and Slow Burn. In addition, Mike performs solo piano at bars like El Gaucho's in Tacoma and Seattle, corporate party events & weddings. He also enjoys backing several local singer/songwriters including The Real Lady A. He performs with his two other guitar/B 3 styled trios called "The Jaap/Wallace Collective" and OTC.

If that is not enough, his most recent endeavors include performing with, Red House, Dee Lawless, Jazz Rays, and with renown harpist/bassist, Jay Mabin, called the Maybin/Jaap Connection.

Since 2004's earning of a 2nd Masters Degree in Education, his latest passion BESIDES performing, is teaching Jazz, Band, and Drumline at Stadium High School and Jason Lee Middle School in Tacoma. Michael says, "Our future behind the survival of ‘quality' music lies deep within helping children grow musically, in understanding, and ultimately, appreciating, the multi-facets and genres of music!"
